MANADO
The gateway to Bunaken National Park, one of the world's top diving and snorkeling destinations, Manado is an exotic city with colorful custom and tradition has a good natural surroundings, both land and sea.
The coral reefs of Bunaken island, less than an hour by boat from the city center, is considered to be one of the world's finest diving locations. Bunaken, together with four other islands, including the dormang volcano Manado Tua, are part of large marine reserve. The safest and most popular diving spot is the sheltered southern inlet, where the coral reef is near the surface, before dropping steeply to a depth of 900 m. The diversity of the fish and coral populations, the brilliant colors, and the steep coral walls guarantee a breath-taking experience.
There are many other interesting attractions, such as Tangkoko, habitat of the smallest monkey in the world, Tondano Lake, and the Ban Hin Kiong Temple. Adventure activities include hiking to Mahawu mountain or Klabat, Tondano Hot Spring, and white-water rafting.
The best time to visit Manado is from mid-April through September. During the west monsoon season from December through February, diving expeditions may be delayed or canceled because of heavy rain, variable winds and rough seas. However, the bad weather only lasts for a few days.
